Successful experience in applying Heberprot-P in a pediatric case in Cuba

Havana, Dec 19 (RHC) For the first time in Cuba and successfully, Heberprot-P, a national growth factor, was applied to a pediatric patient prior to a skin transplant in the central province of Sancti Spíritus.

This was confirmed to the press by Rafael Ibargollín, a specialist at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of Sancti Spiritus, who stated that the nine-year-old boy's recovery is progressing, thus avoiding the amputation of one of his limbs.

The infant had suffered a serious accident with injuries to his lower extremities, one of them with the risk of having to mutilate and place a prosthesis given the damage suffered.

With the application of Heberprot-P, Ibargollín explained, the previously operated tissue was granulated, giving the possibility of a skin transplant that led to the salvation of the child's foot.

He reported that the complicated injury improved after 10 applications of human growth factor - injected during cures with anesthesia in the surgical room - and allowed epidermal grafts to be performed, thus avoiding the risk of infection.

Regarding the consultations carried out prior to this procedure, the specialist said that it was carried out with all the ethical requirements: consultations at the national level - including with the creator of Heberprot-P -, a model of family consent and the management of the José Martí Pediatric Hospital and its Ethics Committee.

Currently, the hospital's orthopedic service is preparing documentation with the results achieved, so that the Health organizations can accredit the use of Heberprot-P in the pediatric age, based on the Sancti Spiritus experience.

In addition, this medication has been successfully applied in the territory in other treatments such as wounds difficult to heal, in the male genital organs, in varicose ulcer lesions, bedsores and in orthopedic surgeries in adults, due to its recognized advantages in reducing the hospital stay and other complications.
