Cuba and Russia strengthen relations as strategic allies

Havana, Jan 26 (RHC) The Cuban ambassador to Russia, Julio Garmendía, highlighted that the ties between both nations today are strategic allies on the bilateral and international level.

In his opening speech at the reception on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, Garmendía recounted the evolution of national historiography from January 1959 to the present.

Likewise, he underlined the links of more than six decades between Moscow and Havana, since the friendship provided by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics when Cuba was facing perhaps the most difficult stage of the war unleashed by the United States.

The Cuban ambassador praised the long years of unconditional support. In this sense, he said that in 2023, both governments signed important documents to boost direct investment of Moscow in the Cuban economy, which constitute a contribution to mutually advantageous joint projects in the spheres of tourism, agriculture, industry, health, energy, among others.

Likewise, he noted that this year marks the six decades since the founding by Commander Ernesto Che Guevara and cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin of the Friendship Society between Russia and Cuba, which has representation throughout Russian territory.

The event was chaired on the Russian side by the first vice-president of the State Duma, Ivan Melnikov; deputy minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Riabkov; and Defense Minister Alexander Fomin. (Source: PL)
