Aliev was re-elected for a new term with more than 92 percent of the votes

Havana, Feb 8 (RHC) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel today congratulated his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, for his re-election for a new term after knowing the results of the elections held the day before.

“I congratulate the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on his re-election, wishing him success in his new mandate and prosperity for his people. I reiterate our willingness to continue strengthening the friendship and cooperation between both countries,” Díaz-Canel wrote on the social network X.

According to data from the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), Aliev obtained more than 92 percent of the votes when all the ballots were counted, in which 67.7 percent of the citizens called to the polls participated.

The general elections of the Eurasian nation were initially scheduled for October 2025, but due to border conflicts with neighboring Armenia in the Nagorno Karabakh region, the Azeri president called early elections last December.

Ten Heads of State and Government from that region and the world congratulated Aliyev, including Ebrahim Raisi from Iran, Arif Alvi from Pakistan, Aleksandar Vucic from Serbia, Latif Rachid from Irak, and Xi Jinping from China. (Source: PL)
