Multi-medalist Francine Niyonsaba, from Burundi, set a world record in the outdoor 2,000 meters by winning the Gold meeting of the World Continental Athletics Tour 

Havana, September 15 (RHC)-- Multi-medalist Francine Niyonsaba, from Burundi, set a world record in the outdoor 2,000 meters by winning the Gold meeting of the World Continental Athletics Tour in Zagreb.

Niyonsaba, Olympic and world medalist in the double oval lap, registered in the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial a time of 5:21.56 minutes, valid to lower by almost four seconds the previous supremacy, held by Sonia O'Sullivan in 1994.

The runner from Burundi crossed the halfway point in 2:41.37 minutes and beat her Ethiopian rival Freweyni Hailu at the finish line, to also surpass the indoor record of 5:23.75, set by Genzebe Dibaba in 2017.

Precisely, Hailu finished second with 5:25.86, the third fastest outdoor time in history over the 2,000m distance.

Aged 28, Niyonsaba exhibits the subtitle under the five rings in Rio de Janeiro 2016 in the 800 meters and this season conquered the scepter in the Diamond League in the five thousand meters after her success in Belgium at the beginning of the month.
