The Cienfuegos men's team won its 23rd title in the National Water Polo League on Friday, after seven days of impressive performance as usual host at the Eduardo Garcia Olympic swimming pool.

Havana, February 12 (RHC)-- The Cienfuegos men's team won its 23rd title in the National Water Polo League on Friday, after seven days of impressive performance as usual host at the Eduardo Garcia Olympic swimming pool.

Led by brothers Yoel and Carlos Ortega, the team defeated Occidentales by a comfortable score of 18 goals to nine, led by Juan Antonio García, who scored eight goals, according to the website of the provincial newspaper 5 de Septiembre.

Among the women, in the duel for the gold medal, Selección defeated Orientales (composed of players from Santiago de Cuba) 12-8.

The bronze medals went to the ladies of Occidente and the men of Oriente.

The leading scorers were Madonnis Chávez (36, Selección) and Redmy de Armas (28, Cienfuegos); the most useful players, Dalia Rosa Grau (Santiago de Cuba) and Juan Antonio García (Cienfuegos); the goalkeepers, Lesdyani Wilson (Selección femenina) and Arián Ferrer (Cienfuegos); the most outstanding coaches, Adonis Casals (Selección femenina) and Yoel Ortega (Cienfuegos masculino) and the best referees, Juan Carlos Menéndez and Alexander Linares.

These finals were witnessed by the Dutch Masters team (veteran players), who will play two matches with their counterparts from Cienfuegos, as part of the II Cuba-Netherlands Water Polo Masters Match.

The Pearl of the South, which boasts nine representatives promoted to the national team, could host the training base of the Cuba U-16 team that will attend the Central American and Caribbean Championship.
