Marlon and José Miguel shine on final day of Superliga preliminary phase

Havana, March 4 (RHC) - Cubans Marlon Yant and José Miguel Gutiérrez stood out in the closing day of the preliminary phase of the Italian volleyball Superliga.   Marlon scored 12 points (9 in attack and 69 percent efficiency), in the victory of Lube Civitanova against Verona 3-0, which guaranteed his team the fourth place in the table.

For his part, Jose Miguel finished his best season in Italy in style, but could not prevent his team, Taranto, from losing 1-3 to Catania.  The younger Gutierrez scored 21 points, 16 of them in attack, with 3 blocks and an ace, and had a 56 percent efficiency in reception with only one error.

Robertlandy Simón had six points, 5 of them in blocks, and Piacenza overcame Modena 3-1 to finish in third place.

Meanwhile, Roamy Alonso scored two points, one in attack and one in blocking, while Brazilian nationalized Cuban Yoandy Leal scored 9 points.

Coming from the bench to receive rest, Osniel Mergarejo added 6 points for Milano, which defeated Perugia 3-2.   The Cuban was very good in reception, with 61 percent, a perfect 48 percent.

For Perugia, the Polish nationalized Cuban Wilfredo Leon left with 24 points and a 52 percent efficiency and six aces.

Jesús Herrera played little and scored one unit for Perugia.

Trentino, where no Cubans play, led the standings with 55 points, followed by Perugia (51), Piacenza (43), Lube (40) and Monza (39).

The eight playoff qualifiers were completed by Milano (38), Verona (36) and Modena (27).

The quarter-final playoffs will be played against Trentino-Modena, Perugia-Verona, Piacenza-Milano and Lube-Monza.
