Cuba's Yakelin Stornell falls in a close fight in Italy Pre-Olympics

Havana, March 6 (RHC) - Cuba's Yakelin Stornell (66kg) lost this Wednesday in a close fight voted 2-3 and Cuba was left without female representatives in the Pre-Olympic boxing event in Italy.

According to the vote of the five judges, the Cuban gave battle in the first two rounds against Krista Kovalainen of Finland, but gave ground in the third and last round.

Three of the officials voted 29-28 for the European, another one gave the victory to the Cuban by the same score and the other one saw the bronze medalist of the Centrocaribes of San Salvador 2023 win the three rounds and voted 30-27 in her favor.

For the president of the Cuban Boxing Federation, Alberto Puig, the Cuban was stripped of a victory, posted on his Facebook profile colleague Hernandez Lujan.

Thus, the two Cuban boxers were eliminated from the Pre-Olympic and only the men remain in competition.

Cuba celebrated on Tuesday Jorge Cuellar's victory over Taufa Levemau of Tonga by a 5-0 vote.

Cuellar (71 kg) showed a remarkable superiority over his rival and this Thursday he will compete against China's Mengyang Zhao, another winner in a division that registered 70 competitors.

On Wednesday, world runner-up Fernando Arzola (+92 kg) and world bronze medalist Alejandro Claro (51 kg) will make their debuts.

Cuba lost Legnis Calá (57 kg) in the Pre-Olympic in his Sunday debut and will also depend on world runner-up Erislandy Álvarez (63.5 kg) in the tournament.
