Havana, July 1 (RHC) - Italian tennis player Elisabetta Cocciaretto surprised by eliminating American Jessica Pegula, world number three, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Wimbledon tournament.

The European player, ranked 116th in the WTA ranking, signed the biggest victory of her career on the grass of Court 2 of the All England Club, with a brave and aggressive tennis that dislodged one of the favorites for the title.

Cocciaretto, champion in Lausanne 2023, took advantage of three of the five break opportunities and kept at bay the powerful serve of Pegula, who failed to impose her rhythm and her experience in the big events.

For the 23-year-old Italian, this is her first win against a top-5 player in Grand Slams and a personal milestone in her second appearance on the London grass.

In the next round she will face the winner of the match between the American Katie Volynets and the German Tatjana Maria.
