Cotopaxi volcano maintains constant activity in Ecuador

Havana, April 9 (RHC) The Cotopaxi volcano in Ecuador today maintains the emission of gases and water vapor at about 400 meters above the level of the crater.

According to the most recent report from the Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School, this column of smoke is heading this Sunday towards the eastern region of the colossus, which woke up in October 2022 and has been constantly active since then.

The day before, ash fall was reported in areas surrounding the volcano, located about 45 kilometers southeast of Quito, the country's capital.

The IG reports indicate that last week Cotopaxi generated seismic activity in its surroundings due to the movement of internal fluids.

Ecuador remains attentive to the situation of this volcano which, if it erupts, its burning lava will melt the glacier and the lahars will be in the city of Latacunga in half an hour and in Quito in an hour.

Cotopaxi, the second highest peak in Ecuador with 5,897 meters above sea level, is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world due to the frequency of its eruptions, its eruptive style and the number of populations potentially exposed to their threats.

Authorities and specialists estimate that the effects would reach 700,000 Ecuadorians.

Currently, there are two other active volcanoes in Ecuador, Sangay, in the southern province of Morona Santiago, and El Reventador, in Napo, in the north-central region. (Source: Prensa Latina)
