Former Malian President Amadou Toure

Havana, November 11 (RHC)-- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez conveyed his condolences on Wednesday for the death of former Malian President Amadou Toumani Touré.

On Twitter, Rodriguez extended his condolences to the people, government, and friends of the deceased.

Relatives of Toumani Touré confirmed his death at 72 years of age due to a heart condition.

The former head of state had a meteoric career that took him from being an elementary school teacher to the country's presidency, passing through several military courses as commander of elite troops and the coup d'état that overthrew former president Mousa Traoré.

In 2002 he won the presidency in the second round of elections, a position from which he was removed by a military coup a decade later.
