Cuba: Deaths of children due to antibiotics investigated

Havana, April 9 (RHC)-- The Cuban Ministry of Public Health is investigating the causes of the death of two children who were treated with Ampicillin, a beta-lactam antibiotic, according to a statement by that state institution.

To this end, a national commission was created to adopt the corresponding measures once this event associated with the use of the drug, which occurred last April 7 in the neonatology service of the Agostinho Neto General Hospital in Guantánamo province, has been clarified.

The statement said that after administering a treatment with Ampicillin to six patients, four of them presented hemodynamic instability events, which led them to mechanical ventilation. Two of them died and the other two are in critical but stable condition.
