Havana, Jun 23 (RHC) -- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel thanked the peoples of the former Soviet Union who contributed to the defeat of fascism on the anniversary of the Nazi army's invasion of Soviet territory.

Eighty years ago, Nazi Germany mercilessly assaulted the Soviet Union. The West looked the other way, waiting for its destruction,' the President recalled on Twitter.

Four years of war with 27 million dead could not defeat the heroism of the Soviet people, he added.

Honor and glory to the Great Patriotic War, which stopped the Nazi war machine and took the red flag to the dome of the Reichstag, marking the end of the dark fascist night, Diaz-Canel stressed.

On Tuesday, the Cuban President expressed gratitude and admiration for the Soviet contribution in a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

In a telephone conversation with the esteemed President Putin, I conveyed my sincere admiration and gratitude to the heroic Soviet people for their decisive contribution to the victory over fascism,' he said on Twitter.

Russia recalled on Tuesday the 80th anniversary of the fascist invasion of its territory and the countries that made up the Soviet Union and fought the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), until the defeat of Nazism.
