Havana, July 18 (RHC)—Cuba commemorated Sunday Mandela Day by remembering the legacy of the South African icon of peace, dignity, and justice.

On Twitter, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez recalled that Nelson Mandela, affectionately called by his people Madiba, was up until 2008 on the US terrorist list.

Mandela Day celebrates peace and solidarity as the only road to uproot hatred, wrote Rodriguez.

He added that Mandela was Fidel Castro's great friend and demonstrated how one could win by the side of truth.

Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honor of the South African hero, celebrated each year on July 18, Mandela's birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on July 18, 2010.
