UNDP Representative in Cuba, Maribel Gutierrez

Havana, Cuba. January 4 (RHC)-- The representative of the United Nations Development Program in Cuba, Maribel Gutiérrez, recognized the country's effort to guarantee the people's health in the face of Covid-19, despite economic shortages due to the blockade.

The official said that the island prioritized health and welfare over economic interests, which meant an enormous effort due to the financial and resource limitations accentuated by the global health crisis.

Gutiérrez assured that the European Union, Italy, Switzerland, and Canada are some of the main contributors to sustainable development projects promoted in Cuba, such as the program for the recovery of houses affected by natural events.

The representative detailed the restoration project of more than 600 kilometers of the southern coast (Mi Costa), which will benefit 1.3 million inhabitants.
She also informed that a study would be supported in Havana's Malecon on the impact of waves during hurricanes, contributing to the preparation to face these hydrometeorological phenomena.

Guitierrez added that this organization finances projects aimed at promoting renewable energy sources and strengthening local food systems, in line with the country's policies and the sustainable development goals approved by the United Nations.

Work is being carried out with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to improve agri-food systems in several provinces and municipalities of the country, in conjunction with local governments, after identifying the potential for obtaining nutrients.

The official said that the results of these initiatives give notoriety to the UNDP presence in Cuba, and they are pleased to see the progress in provinces such as Ciego de Avila, thanks to their efforts and external support.
