FAO representative recognizes Cuba's experiences in food matters

Havana, March 29 (RHC) The Deputy Director General of the United Nations for Food and Agriculture -FAO-, Mario Lubetkin, recognized Cuba's experiences in food security in Havana.

In a meeting with the secretary of the National Assembly of People's Power -Parliament-, Homero Acosta, who is also the regional representative for Latin America and the Caribbean of that UN organization, Lubetkin pointed out that parliamentary relations can decisively strengthen the positive ties between FAO and Cuba.

Lubetkin highlighted the relevance of the dialogue held the day before with President Miguel Díaz-Canel, in which they addressed issues of mutual interest. The visitor highlighted in the National Capitol the valuable experience of Cuba and its Parliament, especially with the approval of the Law on Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutrition Security as an important contribution in the matter.

He also reflected on the challenges of food security in the current international scenario, a challenge that is compounded by the climate, energy and economic crises.

For his part, Acosta thanked the support received by FAO in difficult times experienced by our country and the joint work carried out for several years, while confirming his confidence that this visit will contribute to strengthening ties between both parties.

Likewise, Marcelo Resende, representative of the organization in Cuba, stated that few countries in the world have developed the right to food in their Magna Carta, which is a benchmark for the region.

Lubetkin was accompanied by Adoniram Sanches Peraci, subregional coordinator for Mesoamerica and the Caribbean and FAO representative in Panama and Costa Rica.

On the Cuban side, the presidents of the parliamentary committees for International Relations and Agrifood, Yolanda Ferrer and Ramón Aguilar, respectively, among other legislators, also participated. (Source: Prensa Latina)
