Havana, July 22 (RHC)-- Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, congratulated today on Twitter the renowned U.S. actor and political activist Danny Glover, on the occasion of his 77th birthday.

Díaz-Canel described Glover as a proven friend of Cuba, and recalled how much he did for the release of The Five (Gerardo Hernández, Fernando González, René González, Antonio Guerrero and Ramón Labañino), Cuban anti-terrorists who served unjust sentences in U.S. prisons.

A grateful embrace, expressed the head of state in his tweet, which he accompanied with a photograph of the American actor and Gerardo Hernández, one of The Five, Cuban heroes detained in 1998 for preventing violent actions driven by terrorist groups from U.S. territory against Cuba.

"Happy 77th birthday, dear Danny Glover, proven friend of #Cuba, who did so much for the freedom of the Five and has done so much to bring the Cuban and U.S. peoples closer together. A grateful embrace."

In the same social network, this Saturday Hernández sent congratulations to Glover, Goodwill Ambassador of Unicef, whom he called brother, and evoked the visits he made to him in prison, as well as his promise to see him in freedom.

"Today is our brother Danny Glover's birthday. Congratulations," said the Hero of the Republic of Cuba and current national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution.

"He visited me many times in prison, and despite the life sentences, we always promised to see each other in freedom. Today is our brother #DannyGlover's birthday Today, many congratulations!".

Glover, star of films such as The Color Purple (1985) and Lethal Weapon (1987), received in 2016 the Medal of Friendship awarded by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba in recognition of political commitment to the country and its Revolution and notable work in favor of truth and social justice.

In 2019 he was received by President Díaz-Canel, with whom he discussed the importance of promoting artistic exchanges between Cuba and the United States. (Source:ACN)
