Havana, October 6 (Web Network)-- The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) issued this Friday a statement expressing its position in favor of peace and stability in Haiti.

The text refers to the approval by the United Nations Security Council of a resolution authorizing the deployment of a Multinational Security Support Mission in that neighboring Caribbean country, whose troops will be able to use force in its area of action.

It recalls that "Haiti suffers a serious humanitarian and security situation that exacerbates the social instability and poverty caused by centuries of colonial and neocolonial plunder, underdevelopment and foreign intervention".

It notes that this is not the first time that the Council has ordered a military deployment in that nation, but now it is in response to a request from the Haitian authorities.

The Minrex adds that Cuba defends the legitimate rights of that sister nation to find a peaceful and sustainable solution to the enormous challenges it faces, based on full respect for its sovereignty.

It emphasizes that the main pending task of the international community with Haiti is not to send a military contingent, but to offer it urgently, more and better assistance and cooperation, for its reconstruction and that it can move forward in sustainable development.

"Our country has cooperated with Haiti and concentrated its efforts in areas where it can achieve greater impact such as public health, a key element of sustainability and social stability in Haiti; and also energy, water, education, agriculture and sports," adds the Declaration of the Foreign Ministry of Havana.

The document concludes that Cuba maintains its commitment of solidarity with the Haitian people and will continue to offer its unconditional assistance. (Source: Cubaminrex)
