Cuban President Raul Castro Says Young Communists Congress at the Center of Cuban Reality

Havana, July 20 (RHC) -- Cuban President Raul Castro said that the 10th Congress of the Young Communist League, the UJC, was in tune with the current reality of the country.

The Congress was attended by 600 delegates and invited guests at Havana's Convention Center.

Following the closing of the forum on Sunday, Raul expressed optimism and satisfaction about the new generations of Cubans. The Cuban leader pointed to the depth and quality of the opinions put forth by participants at the Congress. He also congratulated the leadership of the youth organization on a job well done.

In the Central Report to the 10th Congress, UJC First Secretary Yuniasky Crespo said that the issues at the center of debates included the performance of youth organizations at the base and their role in attending to the young people, the results of political processes, and UJC actions in work centers and neighborhoods.

Thousands of opinions raised in meetings throughout the country prepared the platform for debates at the 10th Congress, which focused on the role of the new generations in the current Cuban reality.

Sunday's plenary session, attended by President Raul Castro and other Revolution leaders, addressed important issues related to the defense of the country, including the reinforcement of history as a subject, given the new scenario in which Cuba and the U.S. re-establish diplomatic relations.

The improvement of curricula on civic, legal culture was also in the spotlight as well as initiatives aimed at having young people share knowledge at historic sites and museums.

Also high on the agenda was the use of new information and communications technology, social networks that are sources of knowledge and dissemination platforms to let people know about Cuba.

Concerning the new scenario between Cuba and the United States, the Young Communist leader mentioned the role of youth in this process and the need to be well prepared from the ideological and ethical points view.

The plenary session of the Communist Youth forum was attended by the Second Secretary of Cuban Communist Party Jose Ramon Machado Ventura and by Revolution Commanders Ramiro Valdés and Guillermo Garcia.
