United Nations, October 23 (RHC-PL) -- At the United Nations, Cuba has called for dialogue and no foreign intervention as key to resolve the bloody conflict in Syria.

"Peace in Syria will only be possible through respect for the right of its people to decide their own destiny. The political solution through dialogue and negotiation is the only alternative," said Cuba's alternate ambassador, Oscar Leon, speaking at an open debate of the Security Council.

On behalf of Cuba, Leon said: "Those who feed this conflict from the outside with the clear objective of regime change, are responsible for thousands of civilian casualties accumulated over more than four years of fighting." He also warned that the supposed interest of protecting human life and confronting the extremists cannot serve as a pretext for foreign intervention.
