Brasilia, September 10 (PL-RHC)-- Brazil is becoming the main destination of Syrian refugees in Latin America, after receiving 2,077 Syrian citizens fleeing from the conflict in the Middle East nation.

The National Committee for Refugees (Conare) said the Brazilian authorities announced the disposition to receive more Syrian refugees coming from the conflict zones.

The presence here of more than 2,000 Syrian refugees is quite superior to the number received by the United States, said a report by Conare Wednesday.

After the sharpening of the migratory crisis in Europe, the humanitarian situation in Syria took a projection featured by a wave of thousands of refugees in recent weeks.

The Brazilian government has maintained a different policy to the one by many European countries regarding the Syrian refugees. Since 2001, it increased the granting of visas for those citizens.

In a speech last Monday, published through the Internet on the Independence Day, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff addressed the 'tragedy of a humanitarian nature', which triggered a huge immigration mass of refugees to Europe and stressed the willingness of Brazil to receive these people.
