Massive act to elect local authorities

By Roberto Morejón

The election of delegates to the municipal assemblies of the People's Power marks the present time in Cuba, a country shaken by difficult material conditions and the hostility of the United States, but with adherence to legality.

Cubans have the power to vote freely and secretly in favor of the integration of decisive bodies in the exercise and control of State power.

Before going to the polls, mostly located in schools and accompanied by pioneer children, voters had the constitutionally protected right to propose and nominate their candidates.

They did so in constituency assemblies, where in many cases they talked about the daily vicissitudes, intensified by the U.S. blockade, the expenses to face Covid-19 and the high prices of raw materials and food in the foreign market.

Hence, those attending the neighborhood meetings frequently insisted on the relevance of the elected district delegate to continue identifying the problems in the area and to deal with them before the pertinent authorities, in the search for possible solutions.

But above all, he/she should find answers when the solution to the problems becomes complex and call on the potential of the community to find alternatives, if feasible.

To achieve this, the delegates can coordinate the support of political, mass and social organizations as well as citizens in general.

As can be seen, the elected persons assume a high level of responsibility in the territories and all entities and citizens must support them.

In addition, the delegates are a decisive factor in the integration of the municipal assemblies of the People's Power.

The government of the largest of the Antilles insisted on the necessary autonomy of the municipalities, endorsed in the Constitution of the Republic.

Those territories are closer to the most pressing issues and many government processes must be carried out, for which purpose the State Budget strengthens them, although they will never cease to count on provincial and national cooperation.

Cubans go to the polls knowing the community relevance of the delegates of the People's Power, hence the massiveness of the electoral process, for the sake of the outstanding progress of society and to make participatory democracy effective.
