Today is the deadline for political organizations to register before the National Electoral Council of Ecuador their candidates for the presidency of the country, in view of the early general elections of next August 20.

This advance of the elections was reached after last May President Guillermo Lasso decreed the cross death and dissolved the National Assembly, just when he was subject to an impeachment trial in the legislative body that could have led to his dismissal.

Several candidates have already registered, among them that of Revolución Ciudadana, formed by Luisa González and Andrés Arauz, who will dispute the presidency and vice-presidency, respectively.

Arauz was candidate to the presidency in the 2021 elections, in which he won the first round, but was surpassed by Lasso in the runoff.

Revolución Ciudadana arrives to this new appointment at the polls strengthened, after winning the regional elections of last February, in which it obtained favorable results.

The political movement of former president Rafael Correa won the mayoralties of the main cities of the country, Quito and Guayaquil, among others, and also swept the prefectures.

For many, the binomial of Gonzalez and Arauz has good prospects. Ecuadorians have in mind that under the mandate of the Citizen Revolution the South American country achieved political and social stability and put an end to the neoliberal model, which caused poverty.

Unquestionable progress was made in various areas such as education, health and social security, while at the same time unemployment and inequalities were reduced.

The candidate for the presidency of Ecuador for the Citizen Revolution assured that if they return to government, one of their priorities will be public investment in areas of concern to citizens, such as security.

It is precisely the high level of insecurity currently prevailing in Ecuadorian territory that is one of the main concerns of society. The nation has lived in recent months immersed in a wave of violence and President Lasso's response has been to deploy more police and military, without going to the causes of the problem.

According to the calendar, on August 6 the official list of registered candidates will be announced, two days later and until August 17 the electoral campaign will take place.

More than 13 million Ecuadorians are summoned to the polls on August 20, an opportunity for a change that will lead to build a safer Ecuador for all.
