Subversion against Cuba

By María Josefina Arce

The violent events of July 11, 2021, in which an attempt was made against the constitutional order and the stability of the socialist state, are part of the long list of actions developed by the United States against Cuba, since the revolutionary triumph of 1959.

The figures do not lie. Nearly 3,50 thousand dead and more than 2,000 injured have been caused by the state terrorism exercised against Cubans by the various U.S. governments, which have resorted to all kinds of aggressions in their undeclared war against our country.

They range from the support and financing of a mercenary invasion, the imposition and intensification of a genocidal economic, commercial and financial blockade, sabotage, attacks against Cuban leaders, to discrediting campaigns.

Today, the methods employed have become more complex, new information technologies are used, but the objective remains the same: to subvert the constitutional order and defeat the Cuban revolution.

And social networks are the favorite terrain of the enemies of the revolution. From them they try to manipulate public opinion, create discontent by taking as a reference certain situations such as the lack of medicines and food, and incite violence, putting citizen security at risk.

During the weeks prior to July 11, a campaign of disinformation and slander was orchestrated from the United States in digital networks, through which individuals and groups were openly financed to commit violations of the law, states Doctor of Science Manuel Hevia Frasquieri, in his book "Cuba, a failed soft coup", quoted by Granma newspaper.

It was as the Cuban authorities denounced a concerted operation in the digital public space, to which considerable resources were devoted.

So far this year, more than 300 calls to provoke chaos, violence and civil disobedience in Cuban territory have been registered from the United States and other nations.

Of course, this attempt to subvert the constitutional order in Cuba from social networks is not new. Let's remember ZUNZUNEO, a kind of Twitter aimed at the population and aimed at changing the political order in the Caribbean nation.

Secretly designed by the United States and launched in 2009, it sought to foment unrest in the archipelago. Implicated in this network was USAID, the U.S. Agency for International Development, known for subverting order and overthrowing governments that do not bow to Washington's dictates.

And despite the scandal that ZUNZUNEO provoked, shortly afterwards the United States launched another similar project, PIRAMIDEO, aimed at sending millions of text messages to Cubans, always with the aim of provoking political change.

Cuba has historically been a target of unconventional warfare, which has become a strategic instrument of U.S. foreign policy to intervene in other nations and place governments aligned with its interests. What happened two years ago is part of this plan, which once again failed.
