The self-proclaimed president of Peru is still in the hot seat. The Congressional Oversight Commission recently approved a final report recommending that the legislative body examine the removal of the president for moral incapacity.

Boluarte is now accused of being absent from office between June and July 2023 after undergoing cosmetic surgeries that she did not disclose to Congress.

The case, which was revealed by the press, has been full of inconsistencies on the part of the president. The surgeon who operated on her has contradicted her statements, affirming that she secretly rested for 12 days, during which she could not exercise her functions.

During her two-and-a-half years in office, Boluarte has faced repeated questioning and holds the lowest approval rating ever recorded for a Peruvian head of state.

A study conducted in June by Datum-El Comercio revealed that 94% of citizens disapprove of the president's performance.

She has already been in the eye of the storm because of the Rolex watch scandal. She did not declare the watch in her asset reports, which led to an investigation and the search of her residence.

She is also under investigation for her brother Nicanor Boluarte's case. Nicanor is being investigated for influence peddling, bribery, and belonging to a criminal organization.

Added to this is the ongoing investigation into his role in the dozens of deaths that occurred during anti-government protests at the end of 2022 and beginning of 2023, following the coup against the democratically elected president, Pedro Castillo.

Various agencies have stated that the police and army used disproportionate and lethal force against protesters. There have also been reports of massacres, extrajudicial executions, and other serious human rights violations.

Political and social instability and corruption scandals have characterized Boluarte's term in office. However, she has managed to survive several removal requests thanks to the protection of right-wing groups that have blocked previous attempts.

Experts say the situation could repeat itself, though they point out that being associated with such a disliked president could hurt certain political parties in the 2026 elections.
