Nisia Agüero

Even at the age of 90, Cuban cultural promoter Nisia Agüero still has so much love to give to the youngest members of the community.

She has just received a tribute at the National Theatre of Cuba, a cultural institution of which she was director. Previously, she received another tribute at the Acacia Gallery, adjacent to the Gran Teatro de La Habana, where an art exhibition was inaugurated in her honour. In an exclusive interview with Prensa Latina, this outstanding social worker confessed her desire to contribute more to the community.

"At 90, I don't have much left to do, but I would like to continue working with the neighbourhood and the youngest children. It's already difficult for me to undertake some tasks, but I would like to promote activities in the 'La Timba' neighbourhood near Paseo Avenue. I was there when I worked at the National Theatre, but I can hardly manage it now," said the artist to Prensa Latina.

"In my neighbourhood of Nuevo Vedado, for example, it's difficult to promote the community work I want to do with the children because there are hardly any there," she said.

Agüero is a pioneer in many areas of the country's cultural life. Above all, her attention to grassroots communities and her dedication to this discipline have made her a forerunner. She has carried out several postgraduate studies in social research.

She also met one of her great loves: her husband, the illustrious internist Mario Escalona Reguero. Together, they had three sons.

Professionally, she said that one of her great loves was Alfredo Guevara, a filmmaker, founder of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, and director of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.

'Alfredo was my brother. I loved him very much, and I get excited when I talk about him. On the other hand, another of my great passions is my work — the work I have been doing with the community to this day,' concluded Agüero. (Taken from PL).
