Maestro Leo Brouwer and his office are currently hosting the Countertenors Festival in Havana’s Karl Marx and Martí Theaters and Fine Arts Museum Hall.

Under the slogan “a perfect marriage of intelligent music”, the musical gathering kicked off with the Humor with Class Mozart 260 show at the Karl Marx Theater on Friday, featuring Cuban actor Osvaldo Doimeadiós, Havana’s Chamber Orchestra and Cuban countertenor Frank Ledesma and other guests.

This is the first time that such an event is organized to showcase the singular voices of countertenors. Martí Theater had the performance of Poland’s Artur Stefanowicz on Saturday with a repertoire of Porpora and Mozart pieces, and on Sunday Canada’s Daniel Taylor is set to sing a program called Handel Love Duets with US guest Yulia Van Doren and Steven Philcox from Canada.

Other countertenors included on the event’s program: Xavier Sabata from Spain, Manuel Bras da Costa from Portugal, Italy’s Riccardo Angelo Strano, Darryl Taylor from the US, Brazil’s Rodrigo Ferreira and Cuba’s Frank Ledesma.
