Mapa Salsero pays tribute to Adalberto

Havana, September 7 (RHC)-- A cultural organization in China paid tribute Sunday to Cuban musician Adalberto Alvarez with an activity that highlighted the life, work and legacy of the legendary artist.

The Mapa Salsero organization dedicated a dance session to the late sonero, paying tribute to his legacy with a selection of his best known tunes and the screening of an audiovisual about his vast artistic work.

Director of Mapa Salsero Li Wen Fei told Prensa Latina news agency that the homage-paying ceremony served also to promote tunes by Adalberto and other artists, exponents of Cuban traditional and contemporary rhythms, among the Chinese public.

Adalberto Alvarez was instrumental in launching the campaign the culminated with the designation of May 8th as Cuban Son Day, which was celebrated for the first time this year. He died on September 1st past of complications associated with Covid-19.

He was a renowned composer, arranger, bandleader, pianist and the creator of two of the most emblematic Cuban dance music ensembles 'Son 14' and 'Adalberto Alvarez y su Son', with which he remained for over 40 years in the preference of dancers and Cuban music lovers on the island and around the world.

Nicknamed ‘the Gentleman of Son Music’, Adalberto Álvarez was awarded the National Music Prize in 2008.
