Albornoz reigns at Continental Chess Championship

Havana, May 27 (JIT) - Cuban Grandmaster (GM) Carlos Daniel Albornoz conquered the title in the rapid games of the Juan Dolio 2023 Absolute Continental Chess Championship of the Americas, in the Dominican Republic.

Albornoz accumulated 9.5 points out of a possible 11 and beat his Chilean counterpart Cristobal Henriquez by half a unit, according to the website chess-results.

The player from Agramontino had seven successes and a couple of draws. He also inflicted the only defeat on Henríquez, in the fifth round.

Third place went to Colombian international master Esteban Valderrama, the best among five players with eight points, including Cubans Luis Ernesto Quesada and Aramis Alvarez.

Elier Miranda (7.5 points) and Lelys Martinez (7) were in eighth and 12th place, respectively. Yerisbel Miranda rounded 6.5 points and was the most outstanding woman in 27th place. Three places behind was Daniela Forgas with six wins and five losses.

Albornoz had also been crowned in the Blitz specialty and finished second in the call for classical games.
