Havana, October 6 (JIT) - A group of 15 Cuban rowers are training in the Russian city of Kazan with a view to the XIX Pan American Games of Santiago 2023, scheduled for Oct. 20 to Nov. 5.

"The conditions for preparation are excellent," Angel Luis Garcia, president of the Cuban federation of the sport, told JIT from that venue.

"As a whole they are achieving high levels in their performance, which gives us optimism. We want medals," he added.

Olympian Milena Venega and the duo of Reidy Cardona and Carlos Andriel Ajete lead the armada that includes four girls and 11 men in total, who will compete in several modalities.

The team must return to the island on October 18 to travel in the following days to Chile, where they will compete in the Laguna Grande San Pedro de la Paz from October 21 to 27.

In addition to the aforementioned, Yariulvis Cobas and Juan Carlos Gonzalez will also participate in the continental multisport event.

In Lima 2019, Cobas won the title in the double scull (W2x) and silver in the four scull (W4x). Milena won bronze medals in the light individual scull (LW1x) and in the light double scull (LW2x).

Among the men, Ajete won the silver medal in the coxless four (M4-), and Cardona won bronze in the four scull (M4x).

Angel Fournier, unfortunately deceased, won the other title in the individual scull (M1x).

Cuba won two gold, three silver and five bronze medals in Lima 2019.
