Havana, April 11 (JIT) - The Cuban national team defeated the Dominican Republic 6x0 on Wednesday and improved its situation in the standings of the Sincelejo 2024 Pan American Softball Championship for Men in Colombia.

At the Eduardo Porras Stadium, the disciples of mentor Leonardo Cardenas signed their second victory of the tournament -they opened with a 5x1 win against Costa Rica- and then three successive defeats against Guatemala (2x7), Colombia (0x2) and Venezuela (2x5).

Against the Dominicans, there was a decisive home run by designated hitter Orlando Savigne, who drove in three runs in the fourth inning. For Cardenas' disciples, starter Osvaldo Perez, who went 3-2, was also outstanding.

It was the second victory for Alain Román, who today did himself justice and pitched five innings with five hits and an equal number of strikeouts. First save for Rafael Guerra, who did not allow anything in two innings.

This victory keeps the Cubans with aspirations of getting one of the five tickets for the first phase of the world championship. Cuba will face Panama, one of the nine participating teams, on Thursday.

The best result in a world championship for a Cuban team dates back to 1988, when it finished fourth in the event hosted by the Canadian city of Saskatoon.
