Havana, June 27 (RHC) Today, Cuba made its debut with an epic victory in the 11th Pan American Women's Softball Championship, defeating the United States Virgin Islands 1-0 at the Luis Escobar Pocaterra Stadium in Monteria, Colombia.

It was a battle of nerves, silence, and sweat on the scorching grass of the Colombian field. The only relief came at just the right moment: a heroic hit by Rosangela Jardines, her second unstoppable hit of the game, left her opponents sprawled on the ground after a crack in the opposing defense allowed the player who scored the winning run to take the field.

From the pitching circle, Yilian Tornés was relentless. The experienced pitcher, forged in the heat of the Mexican professional circuit, was a force of nature. She struck out 15 batters and allowed only one clean hit.

Each of her pitches was a statement of pride and character. Hope Trutwein, a worthy opponent, fell with honor after a solid performance with eight strikeouts and only four hits allowed.

The Cuban women's team, placed in Group B alongside the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Mexico, will be looking to secure one of the three spots available to advance to the next round.

Tonight, they will face the Dominican Republic before closing out the preliminary phase against Brazil (Saturday) and Mexico (Sunday).

The tournament awards eight spots for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, six for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, and five more for the World Cup.
