
Bogota, September 15 (RHC)-- The Colombian Air Force has announced that the nation will conduct a joint military exercise with U.S. troops in the Caribbean maritime area of Coveñas, Sucre department. The announcement was rejected by broad social sectors and comes in the context of the upcoming visit to the country by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
The communiqué issued by the Colombian military forces indicates that the operational exercise has the objective of "strengthening procedures and standards in the detection, location and neutralization of illicit activities at the service of the transnational crime of drug trafficking. The joint maneuvers will take place from September 18th to the 21st under the name of "Poseidon."
On Tuesday, Washington announced that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Colombia, Guyana, Brazil and Suriname during a tour that will take place on September 17, 18, 19 and 20.
"This trip will underscore the United States' commitment to defend democracy, combat COVID-19, while revitalizing our economies during the pandemic and strengthening security against regional threats," a statement said.
According to the statement, regarding the scheduled military exercises, the training will help optimize CDF interoperability and strengthen procedures for the interdiction, interception and neutralization of illicit maritime targets.
Similarly, in-flight refueling and open-water search and rescue maneuvers will be conducted under international standards of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
