Santiago de Chile, February 28 (RHC)-- The Special Forces of Carabineros of Chile repressed thousands of people who gathered in the Plaza de la Dignidad (Plaza Baquedano) in Santiago de Chile to demand the freedom of political prisoners.

With the use of horses, trained dogs, riot guns and hydrant cars, the carabineros dispersed the demonstrators who despite the repressive actions, remained in the Plaza de la Dignidad in Santiago de Chile (capital).

Carabineros arrested an unspecified number of people, reporting that they were citizens who carried out acts of vandalism.  However, images and videos are circulating on social networks showing those gathered in Plaza de la Dignidad demonstrating peacefully with signs and banners.

Several injuries were also reported as a result of police actions, including cases of running over with armored vehicles.  The citizenry demands that political prisoners, mostly young people detained since the massive protests of late 2019 to date, be released.  So far, only three detainees have been released, in all cases for lack of evidence and after more than 10 months in prison.

Since October 2019, there have been numerous days of mobilizations that extend to date, demanding the solution of social demands, the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera and the end of neoliberal policies.

From popular pressure arose the process of reforming the Constitution, which is currently underway in that country.
