Xiomara Castro most voted president in Honduran history

Tegucigalpa, December 6 (RHC)-- The president-elect of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, is the presidential candidate who received the most votes in the history of the Central American country, after reaching more than 1,430,000 valid ballots cast in the elections of last November 28th.

According to the last update of the results issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE), with the computation of 80.66 percent of the tally sheets, Xiomara Castro, nominated by the Libertad y Refundación (Libre) party, garnered 50.63 percent.

In second place was Nasry Asfura, of the governing National Party, with 999,214 votes, 35.89 percent.

Local Honduran media highlighted that with the number of votes received, Xiomara Castro made history as the most voted person in this Central American country.  The elected president highlighted the achievement in a message published on her Twitter account: "Honduran people, we continue making history!

The future president will also be the first woman to assume the Presidency of Honduras and also won the election with the highest participation rate.

Since the return to constitutional order in 1980, no elected president had come close to reaching 1.2 million votes.  Xiomara Castro will still accumulate more votes due to the fact that the vote count has not yet concluded.

Xiomara Castro will assume the Presidency of Honduras in a ceremony scheduled for January 27th next years, replacing outgoing President Juan Orlando Hernández.
