Gestational diabetes cases increased during the Covid-19 pandemic

Washington, Jun 22 (RHC) During the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of pregnant women who developed gestational diabetes increased, a scientific institution revealed.

According to a report from the American Society of Endocrinology, experts analyzed the characteristics of the biological mother, gestational weight gain, and pregnancy outcomes, with the aim of exploring the number of cases of women with this disease and the factors underlying the change.

The researchers found significant increases in the pre-pregnancy body mass index, obesity, and other risk factors for the disease.

“The study showed a progressive increase in the risk of gestational diabetes in the first and second years of the pandemic.

The incidence increased from 21 percent before the pandemic to 25 percent in the second year,” the experts pointed out.

The specialists noted that the adoption of a different lifestyle also led to an increase in the number of pregnant women with the aforementioned health problem. (Source: Prensa Latina)
