Brazil annuls Odebrecht evidence against Ecuadorian Jorge Glas

Havana, August 12 (RHC) The Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil has issued a resolution annulling the evidence presented by the company Odebrecht against former Vice President of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, confirmed the international law firm Juscogens on Friday.

The communication recalls that Glas was unjustly convicted in his country and explains that "the annulment is based on the fact that the evidence was submitted without judicial authorization and without respecting due process of law."

Glas' defense, led by Juscogens, based in Brussels, challenged the validity of Odebrecht's evidence before the STF of Brazil and "demonstrated the illegality of the evidence through strategic, innovative, and effective litigation."

The legal team states that the annulled evidence includes documents and testimonies provided by Odebrecht executives, which were illegally used by the Ecuadorian prosecution in a "process that has been criticized for directing and selecting evidence at will."

In this regard, they denounced that "this practice has questioned the integrity of the legal process in the region."

The STF's decision to annul this evidence not only deals a blow to the fight against corruption in Latin America but also sheds critical light on the tactics employed by Odebrecht, a company that admitted to having paid over 700 million dollars in bribes, often in a targeted and selective manner."

The former Ecuadorian vice president was imprisoned for over five years on convictions related to Odebrecht. However, in April 2022, he was granted provisional release under precautionary measures.
