Former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera dies in helicopter accident

Santiago de Chile, February 6 (RHC) -- Former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera died Tuesday in a helicopter accident in Lake Ranco, in the Los Ríos region, the former president's office in Santiago de Chile confirmed.

The aircraft had taken off in the middle of a rainy day and low visibility and shortly after lost control and fell into the water.

The helicopter, owned and piloted by Piñera, was carrying three other people, who were able to get out of the aircraft.

President Gabriel Boric interrupted his activities and returned to La Moneda Palace.

The former president, who served two terms as head of Chile, between 2010 and 2014 and from 2018 and 2022, had a rest home on the shores of Lake Ranco.
