Chileans protest against Piñera after Pandora Papers case

Santiago de Chile, October 9 (RHC)-- Hundreds of Chileans demonstrated in Santiago de Chile, demanding the resignation of the country's president, Sebastián Piñera.  Earlier, the Public Prosecutor's Office announced the opening of an investigation against him for the purchase and sale of Minera Dominga, revealed in the Pandora Papers.

Convened by social, environmental organizations and the Confederation of Students of Chile (Confech), the demonstrators walked through central avenues of the Chilean capital and gathered in front of the Palacio de la Moneda, where they also demanded the release of political prisoners of the 2019 revolts.

"Enough of corruption;" "Come on comrades, we take to the streets again; Planet Earth is not for sale," were some of the slogans shouted by the demonstrators, who for more than three hours spoke out against Piñera, until police and carabineros came to disperse those present.

Regarding the president and his involvement in the scandal of the sale in 2010 of a mega-mining project called Minera Dominga, which contained a payment condition linked to environmental policies and was carried out in the British Virgin Islands tax haven shortly after Piñera began his first term in office (2010-2014).

The Pandora Papers, unveiled by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), in collaboration with the Chilean media Ciper and LaBot, detailed that Piñera sold his share to businessman and close friend of the presidential family, Carlos Alberto Délano, a transaction valued at 152 million dollars.

For his part, Piñera declared that "as president I have never executed any action, nor carried out any management related to Minera Dominga", while defending that such facts were already investigated by the Chilean Justice in 2017, the case was dismissed and he was declared innocent.
