Havana, May 11 (RHC) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel ratified the Caribbean nation's support for Palestine during a meeting with the president of that State, Mahmoud Abbas, who is on an official visit to the island.

Granma newspaper reports that during the talks held Friday, both leaders agreed to continue developing the bonds of solidarity, cooperation and friendship that unite both peoples and governments.

Díaz-Canel reiterated Cuba´s unwavering support to the right of the Palestinians to constitute their own State, with borders within the limits prior to 1967 and East Jerusalem as their capital.

In addition, he criticized the unilateral decision of the United States to recognize Jerusalem as Israel´s capital and moving its embassy to that city.

For his part, Abbas thanked Cuba for its historic support to the Palestinian cause, and at the end of the encounter he conferred to the Cuban leader the Great Necklace of the State of Palestine, the highest Palestinian decoration granted to foreign personalities.

The  distinction has already been granted to the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Raúl Castro and, post mortem, to the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro.

On Friday the Palestinian leader paid tribute to the Cuban National Hero, José Martí, in the Memorial that bears the name of the independence leader in Revolution Square.

Abba´s visit ends  this Saturday with a visit to the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana.
