Havana, October 24 (RHC)--Education Minister Ena Elsa Velázquez Cobiella, blasted  the impact of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba in an address to a special virtual session of the World Education Meeting,

As an example of the blockade's limitations, Velázquez explained that to participate in this meeting, she had to use alternative ways since the US denies the island access to the video conference application used.

She stressed that despite the illegal and unfair policy applied against her country for almost 60  years, stepped up during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cuban government and State have maintained the political will to guarantee free access to inclusive and quality education.

In the meeting convened by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Cuban Education minister emphasized that it is a daily challenge for Cuba to maintain a universal and free education system due to the brutal intensification of the US siege.

Nearly 60 ministers of education from the five continents are participating in the World Education Meeting; being attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Secretary-General; Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO; Omar Abdi, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund; and David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Programme.
