Havana, September 12 (RHC)-- Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero commemorated on Monday the 24th anniversary of the imprisonment of five anti-terrorist fighters in the United States.

The head of government evoked on Twitter that, as promised by historic leader Fidel Castro in a massive march of the Cuban people, the five fighters returned to their country after remaining in U.S. prisons for more than 16 years.

As they were known worldwide, the Five received undeserved sentences after a legal process with several irregularities, allegedly for being part of an espionage network against the U.S. government.

Even though it could not be proven that they had access to information of national security risks, they remained in U.S. prisons for more than 16 years.

Their resistance and courage sparked an international solidarity movement to demand their release.

On December 17, 2014, as a result of negotiations between the two countries, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, and Ramón Labañino returned to the island, as Fernando González and René González had previously returned to the country after serving their sentences.
