Havana, Dec 4 (RHC) The president of the National Electoral Council (CEN), Alina Balseiro, reported on Sunday that the second round of municipal elections in Cuba took place satisfactorily and with a high participation rate.

Balseiro announced that in view of preliminary results, nine constituencies, from seven provinces, could go to a third round.

She added that, if necessary, the voting would take place next December 8, when the candidates with the highest number of votes would be elected.

The president of the National Electoral Council pointed out that 139 of the 168 municipalities of the country had at least one constituency in the second round and Havana and Santiago de Cuba are the provinces with the largest number of polling stations due to the high number of voters registered in the electoral roll.

The official pointed out that next Wednesday all the official information on the results of the first and second round of elections will be made available.

On this day, 2,748 polling stations belonging to 925 electoral districts opened their doors to hold the second round of the municipal elections to elect representatives to the assemblies of the People's Power.

To be elected, a candidate must receive 50 percent plus one of the total votes and will serve a non-professional term of five years.

Last Sunday's elections were the first after the restructuring of the Cuban electoral system and the enactment of a new electoral law under the Constitution approved in 2019. (Source: PL)
