Organization of journalists in Cuba celebrates 60 years of its foundation

Havana, July 15 (RHC) The Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) celebrates today its 60th anniversary.

Its creation, on July 15, 1963 was preceded by a stage of revolutionary effervescence after the victory in Playa Girón against mercenaries trained by the United States, and the participation of reporters in multiple tasks of the Cuban Revolution of 1959.

Representatives of the press, meeting at the Habana Libre Hotel, approved the statutes of the new organization and elected the Board of Directors, chaired by Honorio Muñoz, in an act that was closed by the President of the Republic of Cuba, Osvaldo Dorticós Torrado.

In the days of celebration for the sixtieth anniversary of UPEC, part of its founders and the continuators in various stages evoke an organization and a union located at the forefront of the process of revolutionary transformations, sharing their successes and failures.

Likewise, the contributions of its professionals stand out as war correspondents in Africa, accompanying the medical brigades, and reporting in countries affected by calamities and natural disasters.

The 60 years of life also record the active participation of UPEC in defense of just causes, alongside professional institutions such as the Latin American Federation of Journalists -in Latin America- and the International Organization of Journalists -based in Europe. (Source: PL)
