G77 agrees to declare a Science, Technology, Innovation Day

Havana, Sep 16 (RHC) Countries attending the G77 Summit agreed Saturday to declare September 16 as the Science, Technology and Innovation Day in the Global South.

In the final declaration of the meeting, the member states also requested the President of the General Assembly to call, in the context of the Eightieth Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), a High-Level Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation for Development.

This event will focus in particular on the actions to be taken to meet the needs of developing countries in these areas.

The member states also urged the United Nations Commissions, Agencies, Funds and Programs to make additional efforts to support developing countries in strengthening institutional frameworks and public policies related to science, technology and innovation.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to implement at the national and international levels the concrete measures contained in the final declaration.

In the text, they also expressed their gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Cuba, pro tempore President of the G77, for the organization and development of the meeting. (Source:PL)
