Havana, January (RHC) -- Cuba is celebrating this Sunday a special day of homage to José Martí (1853-1895), the National Hero, on the occasion of the 171st anniversary of his birth.

The day before, the traditional March of the Torches took place in the country. In Havana, it was led by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Raúl Castro Ruz, and the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, together with other government authorities.

During the pilgrimage, thousands of students from various levels of education, young people and people in general marched in a show of fidelity to the ideas of the Apostle and in homage to the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz (1926-2016).

The walk took place from the steps of the University of Havana to the Fragua Martiana, the place where Martí spent several months after being sentenced to hard labor by the Spanish colonial regime in 1870.

s part of the day of remembrance, conferences, forums, workshops, exhibitions of plastic artists, contests and other initiatives in social networks were developed in recent weeks to promote and disseminate the legacy of the most universal of Cubans.
