Ambassador of Cuba talks with president of Sri Lanka in the context of the National Vesak Festival, in the South Asian country

Havana, May 24 (RHC) The Cuban ambassador to Sri Lanka, Andrés González, spoke with the president of that South Asian country, Ranil Wickremesinghe, at the ceremony for the National Vesak Festival or Buddha Purnima, transcending today on social networks.

In a publication on X, the Cuban mission to Colombo confirmed the dialogue between the representative of Havana and the Sri Lankan president at the event, important for the Buddhist community.

Also known as Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima or Buddha Rashmi in Sri Lanka, Vesak is a holiday traditionally observed by Buddhists in South and Southeast Asia, as well as Tibet and Mongolia.

As one of the most important festivals of that community, it commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha in Theravada (traditional school), Tibetan Buddhism and Navayana (the modern reinterpretation of the religion).

Theravada Buddhism is Sri Lanka's largest official religion, practiced by more than 70 percent of the population. (Source: PL)
