Havana, Oct. 21 (RHC) The Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, is here in Cuba, attending a regional meeting on the medical aspect of the assistance and protection against chemical weapons.

Sources of the Cuban Foreign Ministry said Ambassador Üzümcü is attending a regional course on the issue, running October 20th through the 23rd here in Havana.

The foreign ministry source stressed that the presence here of the director general of the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons further consolidates cooperation between the Caribbean island nation and the international organization, which was created in April 1997 by virtue of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction.

Cuba signed the Convention on Chemical Weapons on January 13th, 1993 and ratified it on April 29th 1997, when it became a full member of the organization.
