Cuban president pays tribute to Leningrad defenders

St. Petersburg, May 5 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel began his official visit to Russia today by laying a wreath at the Monument to the Motherland in the Pikarievski Cemetery in St. Petersburg.

According to Prensa Latina, the Cuban president began his official activities by paying tribute to the defenders of the city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) at the monument complex, accompanied by the president of the city's Foreign Relations Committee, Evgeny Grigoriev.

Following the ceremony, Díaz-Canel and the city's governor, Alexander Beglov, held official talks where they discussed the prospects for bilateral cooperation in the economy, culture, education, and other areas.

During the day, the leader of the Caribbean nation will also visit scientific, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence development centers in Russia's northern capital.

On the second leg of his official visit to the Slavic nation, the Cuban leader will travel to Moscow, where he will participate in commemorative events and the Red Square parade marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany.

The Cuban president will also take part in the celebrations organized to mark the 65th anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Cuba.
