Jair Bolsonaro with The Donald

By Guillermo Alvarado

The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, is not only behind in all polls of voting intentions for next October's elections, but also, with his erratic behavior, he is arousing more and more rejection among the population of that South American country every day.

His most recent and disastrous maneuver was to try to make "a worldwide denunciation" about alleged preparations of fraud in the voting, with the argument that the electronic machines to deposit and count the votes are prepared to favor his rival, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva.

For this purpose he summoned the foreign diplomatic corps accredited in Brasilia, but things did not go as planned.

According to journalist Eric Nepomuceno, the ruler first announced the presence of 150 foreign representatives, then he reduced the number to "a little less than one hundred", later he reduced the figure to 50 and a few hours before the meeting, he foresaw the attendance of "about 40".

The communicator added that the ambassadors were warned from their countries not to corroborate at any moment Bolsonaro's coup thesis.

The highest electoral authorities rejected the president's arguments and assured that there is no possibility of altering the results.

It is true that the inhabitant of the Planalto Palace once again made a fool of himself, but beware, the warnings he is issuing about his intentions not to accept the verdict of the elections, or to prevent, if that is possible, that they take place, should not be underestimated.

His behavior is increasingly similar to that of the former President of the United States, Donald Trump, who, seeing himself overtaken by reality, did what no one would have imagined before, he propitiated the attack on the Capitol to prevent the certification of the results and could have caused a great tragedy.

Close your eyes for a few seconds and imagine what could happen in Brazil, with such an unbridled subject, or perhaps more than Trump, in command of the armed forces and thousands of ultra-right fanatics willing to do anything to prevent a victory of Lula da Silva.

The lesson seems to me to be clear. Bolsonaro intended to use the diplomatic corps to prevent the international community from recognizing the results if they are adverse to him, as everything seems to indicate so far.

It is then up to the nations as a whole to send a clear message to the president-candidate, and that is that any attempt to break the institutionality and cling to power by force, will be immediately ignored.

Of course, the greatest word will be given by the Brazilian people, who will be the first to defend truth and justice.
