The World Meteorological Organization, WMO, warned that heat waves, such as the one that is currently suffocating several European countries, will continue at least until the year 2060, in spite of the efforts made to mitigate global warming.

This means that our grandchildren and their descendants will have to face phenomena that, in reality, will become common due to the damage caused by the irrational model of production and consumption, where profit and not the care of the planet, is the absolute priority.

According to the director of the WMO, Peteri Taalas, "we have doped the atmosphere by injecting more greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, so warming and other trends will continue".

A clear example of the irresponsibility of the great powers is that, faced with the scarcity of fossil fuels due to the sanctions imposed on Russia for the war in Eastern Europe, Washington induces its European partners to use coal, even though it is aware of its enormous polluting potential.

There is one fact that is sometimes underestimated, and that is that the climate kills when it gets out of control, and this is well known in Spain and Portugal, where some 1,900 people died this month due to the heat.

There is no complete data on this phenomenon, which also affects northern Italy, France and the United Kingdom, but when they are released, if this happens, the figures will be overwhelming.

Peteri Taalas assured that humanity has already lost the battle against the great glaciers and the polar regions, which will unfailingly continue to thaw, no matter what is done, so if you have photos of these areas, save them so that other generations will know what they were like one day.

While this is happening, in the United States, President Joseph Biden announced a few hours ago that he will take modest steps to counteract climate change, but will not declare a state of emergency by any stretch of the imagination.

It is already a fact that, just as it happened with the right to the voluntary interruption of pregnancy and the control of firearms sales, this administration will also be unable to push through a radical law to combat global warming.

Not a word is said about promised funds to help poor countries cope with climate turbulence, which contrasts with the billions of dollars being spent to send weapons to Ukraine.

There is plenty of money to spare when it comes to taking lives, but none to save them.  With Tito Monterroso's permission, I have to say that humanity is still sleeping next to the dinosaur.
